Insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance is accompanied by an increase in the actual blood insulin. This is an important factor in the development of the metabolic syndrome (combination of disturbed carbohydrate metabolism, hypertension, dyslipidemia and obesity).

Insulin resistance in young women with PCO.

The PCO is the most common cause of infertility and menstrual disorder in young women. For several years, it is known that women with PCO have an increased risk of atherosclerosis and for the later occurrence of diabetes mellitus type 2.

Until now there is no causal therapy for the treatment of insulin resistance. However, it can be influecned by:

- weight reduction - drugs (insulin sensitizers such as mefformin) - physical activity

By improvement of the metabolic situation menstrual disorders are often relieved and fertility is improved.
