If healthy foods make you sick.        

Many sufferers suspect that their complaints are caused by a a food allergy. But in case of diarrhea, bloating and abdominal pain food intolerances can also be a cause.

Common symptoms associated with food intolerances:

  gastric, intestinal disorders

constipation, diarrhea, irritation of the intestines, unclear abdominal pain,   nausea, heartburn

  dermatological processes

eczema, psoriasis, pruritis, atopic dermatitis

  neurological disorders

headaches, migraines, depression states

  breathing difficulties, asthma

cold and cough, chronic sinusitis

  psychological disorders

anxiety, depression, irritability, chronic fatigue, hyperactivity (especially in children)

  other disorders

fibromyalgia, joint pain and joint inflammation (arthritis), immunodeficiency

  overweight

obesity can also be attributed to an intolerance of food

Course of nutrition therapy

The number of individuals with sugar utilization disorders is rising steadily in recent years. Symptoms can only improve through a proper diet.Contradictory and partly inaccurate information, particularly from some Internet forums, make it difficult to apply an effective diet.

Do not only rely on lists

Nutrition therapy with food intolerances is composed of 3 treatment phases:

1. Grace period: You will get - depending on the diagnosis - a list of positive foods that you may eat. In addition, you get important information for your nutrition as a whole and the distribution of nutrients in the meals. The grace period lasts about 3-4 weeks and has the goal to reduce the symptoms.

2. Test period: You will receive a special list for building up your nutrition with more food including precise instructions to determine your individual tolerance limit for individual foods. This period lasts 6-8 weeks and it smoothly goes into the long-term nutrition.

3. Long-term nutrition: In the long term a needs-based nutrition is extremely important.The role of nutrition therapist is to offer compatible alternatives and to develop practical implementation tools for everyday life.

For the nutrition treatment,depending on the diagnosis and the need for information, calculate about five sessions, each lasting about 45 minutes.

Forms of food intolerance

Lactose intolerance

Lactose intolerance means the body cannot easily digest lactose, a type of natural sugar found in milk and dairy products. This is not the same thing as a food allergy to milk. When lactose moves through the colon without being properly digested, it can cause uncomfortable symptoms such as gas, belly pain, and bloating. Some people who have lactose intolerance cannot digest any milk products. Others can eat or drink small amounts of milk products or certain types of milk products without problems.

Fructose malabsorption

Fructose malabsorption is a digestive disorder, in which absorption of fructose is impaired by deficient fructose carriers. This results in an increased concentration of fructose in the entire intestine. Fructose malabsorption may cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence or diarrhea. A chronical fructose malabsorption may also lead to signs of depression, folic acid and zinc deficiency and to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth syndrom (SIBOS).

Sorbitol intolernace

Sorbitol is a sugar substitute and is used by the food industry as sweetener and wetting agent (humectant), but can also be present naturally (mainly in some fresh fruits and dried fruit). Most of the toothfriendly products like chewing gum or lozenges contain sorbitol or other sugar alcohols.

Sorbitol intolerance and fructose malabsorption are often interlinked.

If sorbitol can not be absorbed by the small intestine wall, the sorbitol molecules are metabolised by the bacteria of the large intestine to form gas, which leads to symptoms.

Histamine intolerance

Histamin is produced from the body during the immune response. It can also be absorbed from histamine-containing foods and drinks. In healthy people, the production and ingestion of histamines is balanced out by an enzyme called diamine oxidase (DAO), which breaks down the histamines. Some processes create histamine, others destroy it, and overall the system balances out. But some people have a deficiency of DAO, so the histamines build up in their body, and cause a wide array of symptoms.

Many of these symptoms are familiar to allergy sufferers: rashes, hives, runny nose, swelling in the throat, and itching (with or without an accompanying rash). It’s basically the same old inflammatory allergic response, only without an allergen. But an overload of histamine can also cause an enormous constellation of problems, including mirgraines, digestive upset (constipation and/or diarrhea), nausea, and low blood pressure.
