Nutrition therapy for eating disorders.

An eating disorder is always present when someone uses food for something else.

In the course of eating disorders one might see first indications:

often diffuse and therefore difficult to see / striking eating habits like very slow or fast eating / increasing preoccupation with food and calories / avoidance of social eating / poor appetite or abdominal fullness / weight loss, weight gain or weight fluctuations / sadness, social withdrawal / overactivity or increased passivity

Following types of eating disorders are distinguished:

  anorexia nervosa

  bulimia nervosa

orthorexia nervosa or "morbid healthy eating"

  obesity

 In obesity you might find:

  "binge-eating disorder"

  "night-eating syndrome"

  "craving"

"grazing" (eating many small meals a day)

Course of nutrition therapy

The outpatient nutritional therapy is usually part of an overall treatment strategy (doctor, psychologist and nutritionist).

The nutritional therapy takes care of following topics: nutritional content, conception of current eating behaviour and its modification, regulation of the body weight.

Clients mostly call because they don`t want to continue with their current eating pattern. Not all of them have a classical eating disorder. Some are unhappy because they cannot or dont want to cope any more with habits like for example elimination of carbohydrates. All they want is to eat "normal" in accordance to their healthy weight.

Often the normal regulation of hunger and satiety is disturbed, which needs correction. An important goal of nutrition therapy is also to achieve a healthy body weight and a healthy eating behavior. A normal eating behaviour contains the right balance between carbohydrates, fat and protein. The list of forbidden foods should be gradually reduced and finally given up, regular meals should be introduced.

The success depends on several criteria. In any case, success is not only to be evaluated in relation to the weight, since eating disorder symptoms are much more complex. It is also a success if unhealthy rigid eating behaviour can be changed into a flexible and beneficial eating behaviour.

The nutritional therapy requires at least 5 consultations à 45 minutes. It would be ideal, if the gained results could be stabilized in 4-5 additional sessions à 30 minutes.
